Search Ongoing for Survivors of Pakistan Building Collapse

Rescue operations are underway in Karachi following the collapse of a six-story residential building on July 4, 2025, with authorities racing to find survivors trapped in the rubble.

The incident, reported at 3:00 AM local time in the densely populated Lyari area, involved a structure housing 150 residents, of whom 70 are unaccounted for. The Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority deployed 200 rescuers, 15 cranes, and sniffer dogs, extracting 20 survivors and 10 bodies by midday, though hopes fade as 50% of the debris remains unstable.

Preliminary investigations point to substandard construction and overloading, with the building, built in 2010, lacking permits and exceeding its 100-person capacity. Heavy rains, 30% above average, likely triggered the collapse, a trend linked to climate change affecting Pakistan’s 240 million people.

The government has allocated $5 million for relief, but 60% of locals criticize delayed response times, citing a similar 2022 incident. Families of the missing, numbering 200 gathered, demand faster action, with operations expected to continue until July 7, amid fears of a rising death toll.
