Ruger Criticizes Headies Awards, Questions Credibility

Nigerian Afrobeats and Dancehall artist Ruger has recently expressed his dissatisfaction with the Headies Awards. In a sarcastic post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Ruger referred to the Headies as “the most credible award in the world” and thanked them for recognizing the works of all artists. He further predicted that the Headies would soon surpass all other awards globally.

Ruger’s comments come in the wake of the announcement of the nominees for the 17th Headies Awards. The nominations have sparked controversy due to notable omissions, including Ruger himself. Despite his successful collaborations with BNXN on the joint album ‘RnB,’ none of his songs received nominations.

This isn’t the first time the Headies have faced criticism from artists questioning the award’s credibility and competency. The 17th edition of the Headies is scheduled for April 5th, marking its return after a hiatus in 2024 attributed to economic challenges. The event’s Executive Producer, Ayo Animashaun, has previously expressed concerns over the rising popularity of international awards like the Grammys among Nigerian music enthusiasts, emphasizing the need for local support.

In a recent interview, Animashaun highlighted the global appeal of Nigerian music and shared his vision of hosting the ceremony in various cities worldwide. The upcoming event is anticipated to address these concerns and celebrate the achievements of Nigerian artists.
