Controversial street-hop artist, Portable, has reignited his long-standing rivalry with fellow singer Asake, taking shots at his English-speaking abilities in response to Asake’s newly released single, Military.
The song, which was seemingly a response to critics of Asake’s spoken English, did not sit well with Portable. On January 5, 2025, Portable took to Instagram to freestyle a diss track aimed directly at the Sungba crooner, ridiculing his English skills and urging him to hire a tutor.
In the video, Portable could be heard singing:
“If you sing one, I’d sing two. You can’t speak English! Maybe you should get a teacher, olodo. Go and get a teacher, you have money yet you can’t speak English. Whether or not you’ve been, I’ve not—go and get a teacher. I’m not stupid, I can speak British English well. Olodo rabata.”
The post quickly sparked widespread reactions on social media, with fans debating Portable’s relentless attacks on Asake.
This latest jab comes just a day after Portable teased a full-blown diss track targeting Asake’s wardrobe choice at the 67th Grammy Awards, where he wore a camouflage outfit. In a scathing lyric, Portable mocked him for failing to secure a Grammy win, despite his nomination for Best African Music Performance.
“You wore an army uniform to receive a Grammy, your papa no be army. You wanted to win a Grammy, but they didn’t give you one,” Portable taunted in the song.
Asake, who lost the category to Tems for her track Me & U, had already faced scrutiny after a red carpet interview at the event where his English speaking skills were criticized. His response to the backlash came in Military, where he dismissed his detractors, asserting that he simply doesn’t feel comfortable speaking English.
Portable’s latest attack has only added fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding Nigerian artists and their fluency in English, raising questions about whether language proficiency should dictate artistic success.
