Palestinian President Abbas Calls on Hamas to Free Gaza Hostages

 Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas issued a fervent appeal on April 22, 2025, urging Hamas to release all hostages held in Gaza, emphasizing the need for humanitarian progress amid stalled ceasefire talks. 

Speaking at a Ramallah press conference, Abbas stressed that freeing the captives, including Israeli and foreign nationals, is critical to advancing peace negotiations and alleviating Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. The plea follows renewed violence, with over 1,200 hostages reportedly taken during Hamas’ October 2023 attack on Israel.

Abbas condemned the ongoing conflict, which has claimed thousands of lives, and called for an immediate ceasefire to enable aid delivery. He urged Hamas to prioritize civilian safety, noting that prolonged hostage detention risks escalating tensions. The Palestinian leader also appealed to the international community, including the UN and Arab League, to pressure all parties for a resolution. Egypt and Qatar, mediating talks, echoed Abbas’ call, warning of a worsening crisis without swift action.

Hamas responded cautiously, demanding Israel halt military operations and release Palestinian prisoners as preconditions. The group’s stance has drawn criticism from Palestinian factions, with some accusing it of prioritizing political leverage over human lives. Gaza residents, facing food and medical shortages, expressed hope that Abbas’ appeal could spur progress. Analysts warn that without concessions, the hostage crisis may prolong the conflict.
