Manchester United secured a breathtaking 5-4 victory over Olympique Lyonnais in the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals second leg on April 17, 2025, at Old Trafford, advancing 7-6 on aggregate to the semi-finals after extra time.

The match, attended by 73,000 fans, saw United overcome a 2-2 first-leg draw with a sensational comeback, driven by Harry Maguire’s 120th-minute header, despite trailing 4-2 in extra time, per BBC Sport.

United took an early lead through Manuel Ugarte’s 10th-minute strike, assisted by Joshua Zirkzee, but Lyon responded with goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Rayan Cherki, per Sky Sports. A Bruno Fernandes penalty in the 75th minute leveled the score, only for Lyon’s Ernest Nuamah to restore their lead in extra time, exploiting Andre Onana’s error.

Kobbie Mainoo’s 119th-minute equalizer, followed by Maguire’s header off Casemiro’s cross, sparked pandemonium, per The Guardian. Manager Ruben Amorim hailed the “inspirational” fightback, despite United’s 10th-place Premier League standing, per TNT Sports. United, with 52% possession, face Rangers or Athletic Bilbao next on May 1, with 60% trophy odds.
