Is SARS Back? Nigeria Police Addresses Concerns Over Alleged Return of Controversial Unit

 Amid growing concerns and social media speculation, the Nigeria Police Force has firmly dismissed claims that the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has been reinstated under a different identity.

Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, set the record straight on Monday, clarifying that newly formed tactical squads in state commands are independent units and not a rebranded version of SARS.

“The Special Anti-Robbery Squad, which was officially disbanded on October 11, 2020, remains dissolved,” Adejobi affirmed.

According to him, these tactical squads operate under distinct regulations, have unique uniforms, and are directly supervised by their respective Commissioners of Police (CPs). His statement comes in response to widespread rumors suggesting a covert return of SARS, a unit disbanded in the wake of the nationwide #EndSARS protests against police brutality.

Adejobi further revealed that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun is addressing concerns over alleged misconduct within the new tactical units.

“The IGP has scheduled a crucial meeting with all CPs and senior officers today, Monday. Ensuring accountability in these tactical units is a priority, and we hope to put an end to these concerns once and for all,” he stated.

Reassuring Nigerians of the force’s commitment to professional conduct, Adejobi emphasized that strict disciplinary measures are in place to tackle any infractions.

“The IGP has empowered CPs and AIGs to take direct action on complaints. If necessary, erring officers can be dismissed in line with established procedures,” he added.

The police urged the public to report any cases of misconduct, reaffirming their dedication to transparency, accountability, and professional policing.
