United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed offered a poignant reflection on former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s passing on July 13, 2025, describing him as a leader who was “uncomfortable with politics” yet committed fully to his role.

Mohammed, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Environment under Buhari from 2015 to 2017, recalled his initial reluctance to re-enter politics after his 1985 military ouster, attributing it to his military background and austere nature.

She praised his perseverance through four election attempts, culminating in his historic 2015 victory over Goodluck Jonathan, and his subsequent re-election in 2019.

Mohammed highlighted his efforts to unify Nigeria despite health challenges and economic downturns, though she acknowledged criticisms of his slow decision-making and handling of security issues like Boko Haram.

Her tribute, shared via a UN statement, contrasted his personal integrity with the political arena’s demands, noting his retreat to Daura post-2023 as evidence of his discomfort with public life.
