The All Progressives Congress (APC) appointed Salihu Mohammed Yilwatda as its new National Chairman on July 24, 2025, following Abdullahi Ganduje’s resignation, in a consensus decision during the NEC meeting at the Presidential Villa.
Yilwatda, a former Adamawa State governor and northern stalwart, was selected to unify the party ahead of 2027, with President Tinubu and governors endorsing the choice to balance regional interests. The move ends weeks of speculation over Ganduje’s exit, linked to internal power struggles.
Yilwatda pledged to strengthen APC’s grassroots and counter opposition narratives, including Kwankwaso’s critique of northern neglect. However, some party members question his loyalty, given past ties to the PDP before his 2019 defection.
The narrative of unity is optimistic, but tensions over regional representation and the chairman’s authority could challenge the party’s cohesion, especially with Kwankwaso’s influence in play.
