Wike Meets PDP Chieftains In Abuja Amid Ongoing Party Tensions

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, met with some senior members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) at his official residence in Abuja on Thursday night, fuelling renewed speculation about his influence within the party and ongoing internal realignments.

Although the details of the closed-door meeting were not disclosed, sources familiar with the development said discussions centred on the state of the PDP and possible strategies ahead of the party’s next national convention.

Among those present were the party’s former National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and another top member, Mohammed Abdulrahman. The meeting, according to reports, lasted several hours and was described as “cordial but strategic.”

Wike’s Role In The PDP Power Struggle

The former Rivers State governor has remained a divisive yet influential figure within the PDP since his fallout with the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. Wike, who currently serves in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has often been accused of double loyalty — a claim he has repeatedly dismissed.

Despite joining Tinubu’s administration, Wike maintains that he is still a member of the PDP. His involvement in federal governance, however, continues to spark debates among party members, many of whom view his role as a test of the PDP’s unity and discipline.

Thursday’s meeting appears to underscore his enduring influence, as it reportedly brought together members who have also voiced discontent with the party’s current leadership structure.

Ahead Of The Party’s Next Big Decisions

The PDP has been grappling with internal divisions following its electoral defeat and the resignation of several key officers earlier in the year. Talks about restructuring the party and preparing for a new round of congresses have been ongoing but tense.

Political observers believe Wike’s engagement with some top PDP figures could signal either an attempt to build consensus or deepen existing cracks, depending on how the party’s leadership responds.

So far, no official statement has been released from Wike’s office or the PDP National Secretariat regarding the outcome of the meeting. But footage from the event, which surfaced online on Friday morning, shows the FCT minister receiving his guests in a relaxed setting, suggesting a friendly atmosphere rather than a confrontational one.

While the agenda remains unclear, the meeting adds another layer to the unfolding story of the PDP’s post-election recovery and Wike’s complex role within it, a reminder that in Nigerian politics, alliances rarely stay still for long.
