Starting January 1, 2026, some Nigerians applying for US visas may face restrictions, even if they attend interviews and submit all required documents.
The US government announced the move under a presidential proclamation focused on border and national security. While some visa categories, including visitor, student, and exchange visas, will be affected, certain exemptions apply. Nigerians who already hold valid visas before the effective date will not be impacted.
The restrictions primarily affect Nigerian nationals outside the United States who do not yet hold a valid visa. Applicants falling under the exemptions, such as lawful permanent residents, dual nationals from unaffected countries, or participants in major sporting events, will continue to have access.

The partial suspension is part of a broader measure targeting 19 countries worldwide, reflecting US efforts to reinforce border safety and monitor visa issuance more closely.

Officials say the policy is intended to balance security concerns with fairness, ensuring that vulnerable groups and approved travelers are not unduly affected. Nigerians planning to travel to the US in early 2026 are advised to check updated guidance and plan their applications accordingly.
