Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim delivered a stark verdict on his team’s performance after their 1–0 defeat to Everton, admitting that his side fully deserved the loss despite having a numerical advantage for most of the match.
Speaking after the game, the Portuguese coach said United failed to match Everton’s intensity and desire at Old Trafford, even though the visitors were reduced to 10 men early in the first half.
“They were the better team. We deserved to lose,” Amorim said. “Twenty minutes into the game, red card for the opponent. We need to win this game no matter what.”
Everton held on for the win after midfielder Idrissa Gueye was sent off for slapping teammate Michael Keane during an argument, a chaotic moment that could have changed the flow of the match but instead highlighted United’s struggles.

Amorim, who has repeatedly urged caution amid praise for the team’s recent improvements, said the performance showed United were still nowhere near the level expected at the club.
“Old Trafford was there saying, ‘We are all here to give a big step up,’ and I felt that we were not ready,” he said. “These five weeks, when everyone is praising our evolution, I’m always saying the same things. We are not even near what we’re supposed to be in this club.”
Amorim: Man United ‘Lack A Lot’ After Wolves Defeat Sinks Season
United spent about £250m in the summer to rebuild a squad that finished 15th last season, but the team continues to show inconsistencies.

The defeat leaves them 10th on the Premier League table, grouped closely with Tottenham, Everton and Liverpool, but still only three points away from the top four.
