UEFA Launches Investigation into Real Madrid Players for Alleged Misconduct During Champions League Match Against Atlético Madrid

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has initiated an investigation into four Real Madrid players—Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Antonio Rüdiger, and Dani Ceballos—for alleged “indecent conduct” during their Champions League Round of 16 second-leg match against Atlético Madrid on March 12, 2025.

The inquiry focuses on the players’ celebratory actions following Real Madrid’s penalty shootout victory, which secured their advancement to the quarterfinals. Specific incidents under scrutiny include Rüdiger’s throat-slitting gesture, Mbappé’s alleged inappropriate hand movement, and other actions perceived as provocative towards Atlético Madrid supporters.

UEFA’s Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to examine these allegations. If the players are found guilty of breaching UEFA’s disciplinary regulations, they could face sanctions ranging from fines to match suspensions. Such penalties may impact their availability for upcoming fixtures, including the Champions League quarterfinal clashes against Arsenal scheduled for April 8 and 16.

Real Madrid has acknowledged the investigation and is reportedly preparing to present its defense. The club maintains that the players’ actions were spontaneous celebrations without intent to offend or provoke. Fans and analysts are closely monitoring the situation, as any disciplinary measures could significantly influence Real Madrid’s campaign in the tournament.
