The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, a leading tertiary healthcare institution in Nigeria, is facing a critical situation as resident doctors have commenced an indefinite strike.

The strike, spearheaded by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), UCH chapter, is a direct response to the hospital’s persistent and crippling power outages. Doctors say the unreliable electricity supply is making it impossible to deliver adequate patient care, putting lives at risk.

The striking doctors paint a grim picture of the challenges they face daily. They describe surgeries being abruptly halted due to power cuts, essential diagnostic tests being delayed or rendered useless, and patients in critical conditions left vulnerable.

They argue that the constant power disruptions create a chaotic and unsafe environment, jeopardizing both patients and medical personnel. The ARD leadership has made it clear that the strike will continue indefinitely until the hospital management provides a sustainable solution to the power crisis.

This prolonged strike is already having a severe impact on patients, with many elective procedures postponed and emergency cases facing significant delays. The situation at UCH underscores the broader infrastructural challenges plaguing Nigeria’s healthcare sector and the urgent need for government intervention.
