Two Fuel Tankers Explode at Adamawa Filling Station, Blocking Major Road

A devastating fire engulfed two petrol-laden tankers at an MRS filling station along Numan Road in Adamawa on Tuesday, causing widespread panic and bringing traffic to a standstill. The explosion occurred near the Jezco filling station, close to the Yola International Airport, as flames erupted from one of the tankers before quickly spreading to the other.

As news of the inferno spread, curious onlookers flooded the area, eager to witness the unfolding disaster despite the significant dangers posed by the raging fire. Fire service personnel arrived at the scene to combat the flames, but initial reports suggest they struggled with an insufficient water supply, hampering their efforts. Security personnel were also deployed to manage the crowd and secure the area.

The incident comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with a severe economic crisis, exacerbating the impact of fuel-related disasters. The country has faced multiple tanker explosions in recent months, often with tragic consequences. In January 2025, at least 11 people lost their lives when a petrol tanker lost control and exploded along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

Another catastrophic incident occurred on January 18, when at least 86 people perished and 55 others suffered severe injuries in Niger State while attempting to scoop fuel from a fallen tanker before it exploded. Earlier that month, five lives were claimed in Delta State after another petrol tanker lost control and ignited a massive blaze in the Agbor area.

These repeated tragedies highlight the persistent safety concerns surrounding fuel transportation and handling in Nigeria. Authorities continue to urge caution, warning residents against approaching accident scenes involving flammable materials.
