President Bola Tinubu has instructed all 36 state governors to ensure that local government allocations are paid directly to the councils, in line with a recent Supreme Court ruling affirming local government autonomy.
The President said the directive was necessary to give full effect to the judgement, stressing that true autonomy could not exist without adequate and direct funding for local administrations.
Mr Tinubu made the remarks on Thursday while addressing members of the All Progressives Congress National Caucus at a meeting held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
He urged state governors to demonstrate leadership and responsibility at both state and local levels, saying effective governance must be rooted at the grassroots.
The President also called on party leaders to remain flexible and to actively engage communities across the country, including rural areas, in order to strengthen democratic participation.
According to him, Nigeria must deliberately position itself to deepen governance and service delivery at the grassroots level.
President Tinubu disclosed that his administration was holding discussions with international partners, including the United States and the European Union, on broader security reforms.
He assured them that Nigeria would move towards the establishment of state police as part of efforts to address persistent insecurity across the country.
The President expressed confidence that the ruling APC would support the reform process and provide the necessary political backing.
He also appealed for unity, reconciliation and accommodation within the party, urging leaders to reflect carefully on the Supreme Court judgement and its wider national implications.
During the meeting, Mr Tinubu commiserated with the Bayelsa State government over the death of its deputy governor.
He further called for increased inclusion of women in the party’s caucus, describing their participation as essential to the party’s growth and national development.
