President Bola Tinubu has assured the United States and the European Union that Nigeria will move towards the establishment of state police as part of efforts to tackle the country’s growing insecurity.
The President said the proposed reform would strengthen internal security and improve responses to local threats. He spoke on Thursday while addressing the All Progressives Congress National Caucus at a meeting held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
Mr Tinubu disclosed that he had held extensive discussions with leaders from the United States and Europe on security sector reforms in Nigeria.
He expressed confidence that the ruling APC would support the legislative process required to establish state police.
The President also urged governors and party leaders to demonstrate flexibility, reconciliation and unity, calling on them to remain actively engaged in governance at state and local levels, including in rural communities.
President Tinubu also referred to the recent Supreme Court judgement affirming local government autonomy, describing it as a critical step towards strengthening governance at the grassroots.
He stressed that autonomy must be supported by a properly funded mandate, noting that local governments would henceforth receive their statutory allocations directly.
The President urged political leaders at all levels to take responsibility and ensure full compliance with the ruling, saying effective grassroots governance was essential to national development.
