TICAD9: Tinubu Calls for Two Permanent UN Security Council Seats for Africa

 President Bola Tinubu, speaking at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development in Yokohama, Japan, on August 20, 2025, urged sweeping reforms to grant Africa two permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council. 

He emphasized that the continent also deserves additional non-permanent seats, aligning with the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration, which reflect Africa’s long-standing push for equitable global representation. Tinubu’s address, delivered during a plenary session on peace and stability, underscored Nigeria’s leadership in advocating for a stronger African voice in international governance.

Tinubu argued that Africa’s quest for fair representation is a just demand, rooted in the continent’s growing diplomatic influence. He called on Japan to support these reforms, highlighting the need for inclusivity and diversity in global decision-making. The president also praised the Nigerian armed forces for their efforts against insurgency, describing their progress as a foundation for national stability. He urged market-driven partnerships over traditional aid, emphasizing sustainable development for African nations.

The call for reform resonates across Africa, where leaders have long sought greater influence in global security matters. Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, addressing TICAD9, stressed mutual understanding and local solutions, aligning with Tinubu’s vision. The conference, attended by African and international leaders, provided a platform to address challenges like conflict and poverty. Tinubu’s advocacy builds on Nigeria’s history of pushing for UN reforms, testing the global community’s commitment to a more inclusive Security Council as Africa seeks to shape its future.
