The Tanzanian President, John Magufuli who mocked COVID-19 reportedly died on Wednesday at the age of 61.
As much as many would want the reason for his death to be COVID-19 but it is contrary. Tanzanian Vice President Samia Suhulu announced on live TV on Wednesday that Magufuli died of heart complications in Dar es Salam hospital at 6 p.m.
It’s been gathered that Magufuli had not been seen in public for two weeks.
According to reports, Magufuli never believes in COVID-19 and reportedly downplay the severity of the novel disease.
Premium Times reports, While neighbouring Kenya and Uganda imposed lockdowns and curfew, Mr Magufuli maintained business as usual in his country.
“We Tanzanians have not locked ourselves down, and I don’t expect to announce even a single day that we are implementing a lockdown because our God is still alive, and he will continue protecting us Tanzanians,” DW quoted the late president once telling a crowd.
“But we shall also continue taking precautions, including steaming. You steam, at the same time pray to God, and go on with your daily activities so that you eat well and your body builds immunity against the coronavirus.”
John Magufuli was born on October 29, 1959. A master and doctorate product of University of Dar es Salaam 1994 and 2009, respectively.
Started his career as a Teacher at Sengerema Secondary School then became an Industrial Chemist.
He joined politics under the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party. In 1995 he was elected a member of the Parliament later appointed minister of works the same year before becoming a minister in 2000.
He was reappointed minister of works and transportation for the second time which earned him popularity and helps pave way for him to become the next president of Tanzania.
In 2015, he joined the presidency race and won 58 per cent of the vote, defeating Edward Lowassa of the Chadema opposition party and was re-elected again in 2020 defeating Tundu Lissu.
The Bulldozer as fondly called by his people did help his country bulldoze corruption in the construction industry.
