Borno State is grappling with a distressing increase in missing children cases, coinciding with an aggressive recruitment drive by the insurgent group Boko Haram. Recent reports indicate that numerous children have disappeared from various communities, with many feared to have been conscripted into the ranks of the militants.
A harrowing video surfaced recently, featuring a young boy who recounted his abduction and subsequent military training in a forest enclave controlled by Boko Haram. In the video, the boy described being among dozens of other children undergoing rigorous indoctrination and combat preparation.
Parents and guardians in the affected communities have been plunged into anguish, uncertain about the fate of their missing children. Community leader Alhaji Modu Gana from the town of Bama lamented, “Our children are being taken from us, and we are powerless to stop it. The government must act swiftly to rescue them and end this nightmare.”
Security analysts attribute this surge in child abductions to Boko Haram’s dwindling manpower, prompting the group to target vulnerable minors to replenish their ranks. The Nigerian military has intensified operations in the region, aiming to dismantle insurgent hideouts and rescue abducted individuals. Military spokesperson Colonel Sani Usman stated, “We are aware of the situation and are conducting operations to secure the release of all abducted persons, especially children.”
Human rights organizations have called for enhanced protective measures for children in conflict zones and urged the government to implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs for those rescued from insurgent groups.
