Super Eagles Halt Training in Morocco Over Unpaid Bonuses

Super Eagles

Tension hit the Nigerian camp on Tuesday as the Super Eagles and their technical staff refused to train, citing unpaid bonuses that stretch back to 2019. The protest comes just days before Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Africa play-off semi-final against Gabon, raising concerns about the team’s preparation.

According to BBC Sports journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, the squad withheld participation while awaiting a resolution to the outstanding allowances, which reportedly cover achievements including qualifying for the World Cup play-offs and reaching the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

A statement, reportedly signed by both players and staff, read:
“The full squad, including officials, withheld from training today in Morocco because of unresolved issues with outstanding payments. The Super Eagles are awaiting a quick resolution to continue preparation for Thursday’s game with Gabon. Thank you. From the players.”

Sports photojournalist Sulaimon Adebayo, on the ground in Morocco, confirmed the boycott. Efforts to reach the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the team’s media officers for comment were met with acknowledgment but no detailed response.

Frustration Builds Over Empty Promises

The 23-man squad in Morocco includes captain William Troost-Ekong, forwards Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, and midfielders like Wilfred Ndidi and Bright Osayi-Samuel. Only goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is yet to join the camp.

Earlier sessions had already seen a reduced turnout, with only 14 players training on Monday. Some players, like Sevilla duo Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke, were absent due to travel schedules, while African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman arrived later in the afternoon.

The boycott exposes a growing frustration within the team over long-standing financial promises that remain unfulfilled, reflecting broader issues around player welfare in Nigerian football.

High Stakes Ahead of Gabon Clash

Nigeria is set to face Gabon on Thursday at Rabat’s 22,000-capacity Moulay Hassan Stadium. Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo will contest the other semi-final, with winners advancing to the inter-confederation play-offs for a 2026 World Cup slot.

For the Super Eagles, the protest is not just about money, it’s about respect and accountability. While the team awaits swift resolution, fans and analysts alike are watching closely to see if off-field disputes will affect Nigeria’s performance on the pitch.

With the World Cup dream hanging in the balance, the spotlight is now on the NFF to settle the issue quickly and ensure the squad can focus on the high-stakes clash against Gabon.
