Speed Darlington Faces Legal Consequences for Ignoring NAPTIP Summons Over Alleged Rape

 Nigerian rapper Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, is facing potential legal action after failing to honor an invitation from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) on May 30, 2025, in Abuja.

The summons was issued following a viral video in which the 40-year-old artist allegedly admitted to engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl at a hotel in Lagos. The video, posted on his Instagram in early May 2025, sparked widespread outrage, prompting NAPTIP to investigate allegations of defilement and child abuse, offenses punishable under Nigeria’s Child Rights Act and Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Act.

NAPTIP’s investigation began after social media activist Isaac Fayose publicized the case, claiming the minor and her mother were preparing to file an official police statement. On May 29, NAPTIP summoned Darlington to its headquarters to address the allegations, but he neither appeared nor sent legal representation, citing scheduling conflicts and claiming the video was “misinterpreted.” His lawyer, Stanley Alieke, publicly severed ties with him on May 27, stating ethical concerns over defending the case after reviewing the video evidence. Darlington responded via Instagram Live, denying the allegations and asserting the encounter was consensual, though he did not specify the girl’s age, further complicating his defense given Nigeria’s age of consent laws.

The case has intensified public scrutiny, with Nigerians commending NAPTIP’s swift response and demanding accountability. The agency has escalated the matter, issuing a public warning on May 31 that Darlington risks arrest if he fails to comply by June 3. The minor, whose identity is protected, reportedly provided a statement to Lagos police on May 29, corroborated by hotel CCTV footage and witness testimonies. Legal experts note that conviction for defilement carries a minimum seven-year sentence, with additional penalties for trafficking-related charges.
