Inter Miami midfielder and former Barcelona icon Sergio Busquets has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the ongoing Major League Soccer (MLS) season.
The 37-year-old defensive midfielder confirmed the news in a heartfelt video shared on Instagram on Thursday, marking the conclusion of one of the most decorated careers in modern football.
“These will be my last months on the pitch. I’m retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all grateful,” Busquets said.
“A heartfelt thank you to everyone and to football for everything. You will always be a part of this beautiful story.”

Busquets rose through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy to become the heartbeat of one of the most successful club sides in football history. Known for his vision, positioning, and calmness under pressure, he redefined the role of a defensive midfielder.
Across 15 seasons with Barcelona, Busquets won nine La Liga titles, three UEFA Champions League trophies, and seven Copa del Rey titles.
He also formed a formidable midfield trio with Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, powering Barcelona’s tiki-taka style under Pep Guardiola.
Internationally, Busquets was equally instrumental for Spain, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 UEFA European Championship, amassing 143 caps before retiring from international duty after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In 2023, Busquets moved to the United States to join former teammate Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, where he quickly became a cornerstone of the club’s midfield. Together, they led the team to its first-ever Leagues Cup title, helping raise MLS’s global profile.

Though Miami’s current season has been mixed, Busquets has remained a key figure on and off the pitch, providing leadership and experience to a young squad.
His retirement announcement signals the end of an era for football fans who watched him dominate Europe’s biggest stages for over a decade.
Tributes have already begun pouring in from former teammates, clubs, and fans around the world celebrating his unique ability to control games with intelligence rather than brute force.
Busquets is expected to play his final game in November when Inter Miami concludes its regular season campaign.
