South-East Caucus Pushes for Kanu’s Release, Cites Rising Tensions

Members of the South-East caucus in the House of Representatives have called on President Bola Tinubu to consider granting a presidential pardon to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The lawmakers, who made the appeal in a statement on Monday after a closed-door meeting, said Kanu’s prolonged imprisonment had continued to heighten tension in the region despite repeated appeals for calm. They argued that a political resolution backed by presidential clemency could ease long-standing grievances and create room for meaningful dialogue.

They noted that Section 175 of the 1999 Constitution gives the President power to grant mercy in exceptional moments, adding that Nigeria had previously relied on such discretion to promote peace and national unity.

According to the caucus, a pardon would send a strong signal of inclusiveness and demonstrate a commitment to national healing. They believe Kanu’s release could pave the way for structured engagement between the Federal Government, elected leaders, and community groups in the South-East.

The lawmakers also linked Kanu’s detention to economic and social disruptions in the zone, including market closures, reduced business activities, safety concerns, and the emotional strain experienced by residents.

While reaffirming respect for the judiciary and the judgment delivered last week, the caucus said the matter had evolved beyond a legal issue. They described it as a national concern with humanitarian and security implications that require political intervention.

They therefore urged President Tinubu to deploy his constitutional powers “in the interest of unity, stability, and long-term peace.”

Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 20 after being convicted on seven counts of terrorism. Justice James Omotosho held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and ruled that Kanu’s broadcasts and directives amounted to preparatory acts of terrorism.

However, members of Kanu’s legal team have since vowed to challenge the ruling at the Court of Appeal.
