Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to represent Nigeria at the 2nd United Nations Food Systems Summit, scheduled for July 29-30, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as confirmed by the Presidency on July 27, 2025.

The summit, organized by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), aims to address global food security amid climate change, with a focus on sustainable agriculture and nutrition. Shettima will lead a delegation to present Nigeria’s National Pathways for Food Systems Transformation, emphasizing the country’s $158.15 million Agriculture Value Chain programme across nine northern states.

The Vice President’s attendance follows his role in the 2021 summit, where Nigeria committed to reducing post-harvest losses by 25% by 2030. With 4.4 million Nigerians facing acute hunger in 2025 per the UN Food Security Assessment, his agenda includes securing international funding and partnerships.

Ethiopian hosts anticipate 2,000 delegates, including world leaders, though some analysts question Nigeria’s domestic policy coherence given ongoing farmer-herder conflicts. The narrative of global engagement is promising, but its impact hinges on actionable outcomes and local execution.
