In a major political shift in Edo State, 17 out of the 18 local government chairmen have announced their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This mass defection is seen as a significant blow to the PDP, which has been struggling with internal divisions and leadership crises in the state.
The chairmen, who held a press conference to declare their decision, cited dissatisfaction with the leadership of the PDP in Edo as their primary reason for switching allegiance. They accused the party of sidelining grassroots politicians and failing to provide a clear direction ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial election. According to them, the APC’s vision for governance aligns better with their objectives for local government administration.
Political analysts have described this move as a major setback for the PDP, especially as the state prepares for a crucial election. The defection strengthens the APC’s chances of reclaiming power in Edo and presents a significant challenge to Governor Monday Okpebholo’s influence within the state.
Meanwhile, PDP leaders in Edo have dismissed the defections, calling them an act of desperation by politicians seeking personal gains. They assured party supporters that the PDP remains strong and will not be affected by the departure of the chairmen. However, with the APC gaining ground, the political dynamics in Edo State could shift dramatically in the coming months.
