Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Defies Government Ban, Holds Homecoming Rally Amidst Tight Security

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the representative of Kogi Central in the National Assembly, defied a government directive banning public gatherings by holding a grand homecoming rally in Ihima, Kogi State.

The rally, which drew thousands of supporters from across the five local government areas in the senatorial district, was held despite an earlier warning from the Kogi State Government prohibiting such political gatherings due to alleged security concerns.

As early as 8:00 a.m., an enthusiastic crowd gathered at strategic points along the major roads in Ihima to welcome the senator, chanting songs of support. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as people waved banners and flags bearing Akpoti-Uduaghan’s image and messages of solidarity.

Addressing her supporters, the senator emphasized that she had not violated any laws by organizing the event, stating that peaceful assembly is a fundamental right. “I am breaking no law. My people have the right to gather and celebrate their representative. No intimidation or suppression will stop me from serving them,” she declared.

Security operatives, including police officers and members of the Department of State Services (DSS), were deployed to the area to maintain order. However, the rally concluded without any incidents of violence or disruption.

Observers believe that the Kogi State Government’s ban on rallies was politically motivated, as Akpoti-Uduaghan is a member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In contrast, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state has held similar events without interference.

Despite concerns about potential confrontations, the senator’s homecoming rally demonstrated her strong grassroots support and defiance of political intimidation.
