Senator Kalu Urges President Tinubu to Recognize MKO Abiola as Former President

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, has called on President Bola Tinubu to officially recognize the late Chief MKO Abiola as a former President of Nigeria. Kalu’s appeal includes a request to place Abiola’s portrait alongside those of past leaders in the Presidential Villa, symbolizing a formal acknowledgment of his contributions to the nation’s democratic journey.

This appeal follows recent revelations by former military President Ibrahim Babangida, who admitted that the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely believed to have been won by Abiola, was a mistake. Babangida’s admission has reignited discussions about Abiola’s legacy and the need for his formal recognition in Nigeria’s history.

Senator Kalu emphasized that such recognition would serve as a step toward national healing and reconciliation, honoring Abiola’s enduring legacy in the fight for democracy. He stated, “I am now appealing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to crown existing honor with MKO Abiola’s portrait in the lineup of past Presidents and current. I believe it’s the right thing to do for redemption, justice, and fairness.”

The call for Abiola’s recognition has garnered support from various quarters, with advocates asserting that it would rectify historical oversights and pay homage to his sacrifice for Nigeria’s democratic progress.
