The Nigerian Senate is set to receive the report on the ₦54.2 trillion 2025 budget estimates this week, with potential passage following shortly thereafter. Senate President Godswill Akpabio made this known during plenary on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
Akpabio disclosed that the Senate Committee on Appropriations, chaired by Senator Adeola Olamilekan, is expected to present its report on Wednesday or Thursday. This will pave the way for final deliberations and approval of the budget.
The announcement came during discussions on a separate bill seeking to establish a Federal University of Agriculture in Abak, Akwa Ibom State. Akpabio noted that some senators were absent from the chamber as they were finalizing work on the 2025 Appropriation Bill.
“You will observe that some of our colleagues are not in the chamber because they are working on the final details of the 2025 Appropriation Bill, which will be laid before us tomorrow (Wednesday) or the next day (Thursday),” Akpabio stated.
The urgency surrounding the budget deliberations is due to the need to ensure the seamless execution of government policies and projects for the fiscal year. Once presented, the report will undergo final review, after which it is expected to be passed into law.
The ₦54.2 trillion budget, when approved, will guide government spending and economic policies in 2025, with allocations across critical sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security. Stakeholders are closely monitoring the process, given the budget’s significance in shaping Nigeria’s economic trajectory for the coming year.
