The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following a thorough screening session on Thursday.
Amupitan, a distinguished law professor, faced senators for over two hours, during which he outlined how he intends to restore credibility to Nigeria’s electoral system and introduce reforms that ensure transparency and fairness in future elections.
The 58-year-old academic was nominated by President Bola Tinubu and received formal endorsement from the National Council of State last week. He succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, becoming the sixth substantive chairman of INEC.
Speaking after the confirmation, political analysts noted that Amupitan’s appointment comes at a critical juncture as the nation prepares for upcoming elections. His leadership is expected to tackle persistent issues such as vote manipulation, logistical inefficiencies, and public distrust in the electoral process.

Amupitan’s professional background and academic expertise in law are seen as assets in navigating the complex legal and administrative challenges facing INEC. Senators emphasized the need for the commission to not only conduct free and fair elections but also to regain the confidence of the electorate.
