Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu celebrated the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s sweeping victory in the July 12, 2025, local government elections, securing all 20 chairmanship and 37 local council development area seats, as announced by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) on July 13.

The win, despite a 12% turnout, reinforces APC’s dominance, with Sanwo-Olu attributing it to his administration’s developmental strides, like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. However, his joy was tempered by the deaths of former President Muhammadu Buhari and the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, on July 13.

Sanwo-Olu expressed condolences in a statewide address on July 14, describing Buhari as a “patriot” and Adetona as a “cultural icon” whose 65-year reign shaped Ijebuland. The dual mourning has led to plans for a memorial service, while opposition parties like the PDP allege electoral irregularities, a claim LASIEC refutes with BVAS data.

Security forces, deployed at 20,000 strong, maintained order, but the low turnout has sparked debate on voter engagement. Sanwo-Olu’s dual focus highlights his leadership amid national grief.
