Rwanda’s Kagame Reappears After Health Rumors, Signals Robust Leadership

Rwandan President Paul Kagame made a public appearance at a youth summit in Kigali on June 22, dispelling rumors of health issues that surfaced after his absence from an AU meeting on June 15.

The 67-year-old leader, in power since 2000, delivered a 40-minute speech, reaffirming his commitment to Rwanda’s development.

Rumors, fueled by unverified reports of hospitalization in Germany, were denied by State Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe, who called them “malicious,”. Kagame’s appearance, alongside First Lady Jeannette Kagame, focused on Rwanda’s Vision 2050, targeting 7% GDP growth and $1 billion in FDI for 2025. He addressed regional tensions, including DRC’s accusations of Rwanda backing M23 rebels, which displaced 1.7 million in North Kivu.

Kagame’s health, a sensitive topic given his 24-year rule, sparked debate on succession, with critics like Victoire Ingabire urging democratic reforms. Kagame’s reappearance aligns with a June 27 peace deal with DRC. Analysts note his leadership remains pivotal, with elections looming in 2028
