Russell Brand Denies Rape and Sexual Assault Allegations in Court

British comedian and actor Russell Brand pleaded not guilty to 14 charges, including rape, sexual assault, and controlling behavior, at Snaresbrook Crown Court in London on May 28, 2025. The allegations, spanning 2006 to 2013, involve four women who claim Brand assaulted them during his time as a BBC Radio 2 and Channel 4 presenter.

The charges include three counts of rape, six counts of sexual assault, one count of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, and four counts of controlling or coercive behavior. Brand, 49, appeared in court wearing a black suit and glasses, speaking only to confirm his plea.

The accusations emerged in September 2023 following a joint investigation by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times, prompting Brand’s preemptive denial via YouTube, where he claimed all encounters were consensual. Prosecutors presented evidence, including text messages and witness statements, alleging Brand used his fame to exploit victims, one of whom was 16 at the time. The coercive behavior charges relate to alleged emotional abuse and manipulation. Brand’s defense argued that the relationships were consensual and accused the media of orchestrating a “witch hunt” to damage his reputation.

The trial, expected to last six weeks, has drawn significant attention, with Brand’s supporters rallying outside the court, citing his spiritual reinvention and anti-establishment views. Critics, including women’s rights groups, have praised the accusers’ bravery, highlighting the case’s role in addressing power dynamics in entertainment. Brand remains on bail with conditions prohibiting contact with the complainants. The case has sparked broader discussions about accountability for high-profile figures and the challenges of prosecuting historical sexual offenses, with the outcome likely to influence public discourse on consent and justice.
