Rotimi Amaechi Strongly Condemns Suspension of Governor Fubara and Other Officials, Calls It a Direct Violation of the Nigerian Constitution

Former Governor of Rivers State and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has openly condemned the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other key officials, describing it as an outright violation of Nigeria’s constitutional provisions. Amaechi, who has been a central figure in Rivers State politics for decades, expressed deep concerns over the legal and democratic implications of the recent political decisions affecting the state.

Speaking during a media engagement, the former governor criticized what he termed as a dangerous political maneuver that could have long-term consequences for Nigeria’s democratic system. According to him, the suspension of a sitting governor—an action that has no clear constitutional backing—sets a worrisome precedent that undermines the principles of separation of powers and state autonomy.

“The Nigerian Constitution clearly defines the roles and powers of state governors, and there is no provision that allows for their arbitrary suspension by any political authority,” Amaechi stated. “If we allow this to stand, then we are sending a message that elected officials can be removed from office outside of constitutional processes, which is an attack on democracy itself.”

Amaechi further warned that if such actions continue unchecked, other states could become vulnerable to similar political manipulations, thereby weakening Nigeria’s democratic institutions. He called on legal experts, civil society organizations, and concerned citizens to speak out against what he described as an erosion of democratic norms.

The suspension of Governor Fubara has sparked outrage in various quarters, with legal scholars debating its constitutionality and political observers questioning the true motives behind the move. As Rivers State remains in a state of political uncertainty, the coming days are expected to bring further reactions and possible legal battles over the legitimacy of the suspension.
