Brazilian football legend Marcelo has officially announced his retirement, bringing an illustrious 16-year career at Real Madrid to an end. The 36-year-old left-back won six La Liga titles and five Champions League trophies during his tenure with the Spanish giants.
“At 18, Real Madrid opened its doors to me, and now I can proudly say that I am a true ‘Madrileño’,” Marcelo said in a heartfelt social media post. “What a journey—Real Madrid is a unique club.”
Marcelo also secured two Copa del Rey titles and four Club World Cups, making 546 appearances and scoring 38 goals for Los Blancos.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez paid tribute, stating, “He is one of the greatest left-backs in football history and a Real Madrid legend. This club will always be his home.”
Internationally, Marcelo earned 58 caps for Brazil, featuring in the 2014 and 2018 World Cups and winning the 2013 Confederations Cup. He also collected Olympic medals—silver in 2012 and bronze in 2008.
After leaving Madrid, Marcelo briefly joined Greek club Olympiakos before returning to Fluminense, where he played a key role in their 2023 Copa Libertadores triumph. He mutually parted ways with the club last November and has not played since.
