Prof. Fawehinmi Named New Vice Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University

The University of Abuja, now renamed Yakubu Gowon University, has appointed Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi as its new Vice Chancellor. His appointment was approved by the university’s Governing Council during its 80th Extraordinary Meeting held on Friday.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, who said the appointment will take effect from February 10, 2026, for a single, five-year term that cannot be renewed.

Professor Fawehinmi is currently the Vice Chancellor of the Nigerian British University and will take over from Professor Mathew Adamu, who has been serving in an acting capacity since August 2025. The Council has also approved an extension of Adamu’s tenure until February 10, 2026, when Fawehinmi officially assumes office.

A Scholar With Deep Academic Roots

Fawehinmi is a Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Biomedical Anthropology with years of experience in teaching, research, and university administration. Over the course of his career, he has served as Head of Department of Anatomy, Associate Dean, and Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at the University of Port Harcourt.

Between 2016 and 2020, he also served as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), a role that further strengthened his experience in leadership and academic governance.

The professor is well known within professional and academic circles. He has been Secretary-General and Executive Council member of the Nigerian Medical Association in Rivers State, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Anatomical Sciences, and President of the Society of Experimental and Clinical Anatomists of Nigeria between 2014 and 2016.

Recognized for Innovation and Service

Beyond his administrative experience, Fawehinmi has received several academic and community service awards, including a Federal Government patent for his invention, the AMRG Anthropometry Chair for Dimensional Body Measurements.

He is also a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria.

Known for attracting both national and international research grants, the professor has been celebrated for his commitment to innovation, academic excellence, and service.

With his appointment, the university community is expected to witness new reforms and stronger academic leadership as he prepares to assume his role in 2026.
