President Tinubu Receives Duke of Edinburgh Prince Edward in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu on Monday welcomed the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, to the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The visit marks the start of a week-long series of events in Lagos from November 17 to 23, 2025, aimed at promoting the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award across the world.

Prince Edward’s programme will bring together nearly 200 young people from more than 50 countries, alongside global leaders, policymakers, and representatives from youth movements involved in the Award.

The participants are set to engage in a three-day youth leadership programme before attending the International Award’s triennial Forum, which focuses on expanding access and opportunities for young people globally.

According to organisers, the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award currently engages around 1.2 million young people in more than 130 countries. While the UK accounts for roughly half of participants, Kenya is second, and Nigeria has seen a 37% increase in participation over the past year, reflecting growing interest in West Africa.

The meeting at the State House provided an opportunity for President Tinubu to discuss Nigeria’s role in fostering youth development and international collaboration through the Award.

Prince Edward’s visit underscores Nigeria’s rising prominence in global youth initiatives and highlights efforts to empower young people with skills, leadership training, and international exposure.
