President Tinubu Officially Appoints Ibok-ete Ibas as Sole Administrator of Rivers State Amid Political Tensions

In a move that has further intensified the political crisis in Rivers State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially sworn in former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas (retd.), as the Sole Administrator of the state. The decision, which has been met with mixed reactions from political stakeholders and citizens alike, follows weeks of heated confrontations between key political actors in the state, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Ibok-ete Ibas, who previously served as Nigeria’s Chief of Naval Staff, has been given the responsibility of overseeing the affairs of the state in what the federal government describes as an effort to restore order and stability. However, critics argue that this move undermines democratic governance and disregards the constitutional role of an elected governor.

The appointment of a sole administrator, rather than allowing the elected government to function, has sparked concerns about executive overreach and the potential erosion of democratic structures within the state. Political analysts have pointed out that the decision could set a controversial precedent in Nigeria’s political history, where federal authorities directly take control of state governance under the guise of maintaining order.

The crisis in Rivers State has been brewing for months, with deep divisions among political leaders and a power struggle that has seen the House of Assembly split into factions. While supporters of the federal government argue that the situation required urgent intervention, opponents believe that the move is an attempt to sideline Governor Fubara and impose external control over the affairs of the state.

As Nigerians continue to react to this development, the question remains: will this appointment bring stability to Rivers State, or will it further escalate the crisis?
