The Nigerian Presidency, on June 29, 2025, categorically dismissed rumors that Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume had been replaced, labeling the claims as “baseless misinformation.”

Spokesman Bayo Onanuga, in a statement from Saint Lucia, where President Bola Tinubu is on a diplomatic visit, affirmed Akume’s continued leadership in coordinating government policies. The rumors surfaced after the resignation of APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje on June 27, with some speculating that Akume, a Benue-born political veteran, might assume the party chairmanship to bolster Tinubu’s northern alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.

Akume, appointed SGF in June 2023, has been instrumental in implementing Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, overseeing reforms amid Nigeria’s 33% inflation and security challenges, including 10,217 deaths from armed attacks since May 2023. His tenure as Benue governor (1999–2007) and his mentorship under Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu, a democratic icon, have cemented his influence, with 60% of Benue’s political leadership tracing lineage to his network.

The Presidency’s clarification aims to stabilize governance as Tinubu navigates international engagements. Critics, including PDP’s Debo Ologunagba, argue the rumors reflect APC’s internal rifts, with 20% of its 20 state chapters in disarray. Akume plans to launch a N10 billion policy coordination fund in Q3 2025 to streamline federal projects, reinforcing his pivotal role.
