The Kebbi State Police Command has warned against plans by some groups and NGOs to stage a protest over the recent abduction of students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, saying the state’s security atmosphere is too unstable for demonstrations.
Police spokesperson Nafiu Abubakar issued the warning on Friday, explaining that intelligence reports indicated that organisers were mobilising for a public march. He said any protest at this time could inflame tensions and potentially spark violence, given how fragile the situation already is.
While acknowledging the widespread outrage following the abduction, Abubakar described the planned protest as “misguided and counterproductive.” According to him, such gatherings may interfere with ongoing rescue operations and place additional pressure on security personnel working to ensure the safe return of the students.

He reiterated that the police remain focused on protecting lives and property, urging residents to stay calm and continue supporting security agencies by reporting suspicious movement or persons.

The warning comes days after gunmen stormed the Maga school in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area, killing the school’s Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, and abducting dozens of schoolgirls. Witnesses said the attackers moved unhindered, leaving the community devastated and in deep mourning.
Makuku was shot while attempting to shield the students during the attack. Community members have since held prayer sessions for his soul, asking Allah to grant him mercy and comfort his family in their grief.
