The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a prominent leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsideen Adio, popularly known as “Shameleon,” in connection with a case of murder and another of assault occasioning harm.

According to the Command’s Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, the 55-year-old is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, where discreet investigations into both cases are underway.

Police say Adio allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, using a helmet and his fists to inflict serious injuries. The victim was rushed to a hospital and remains on oxygen as he continues receiving treatment.

In a separate incident reported earlier, Adio was accused of repeatedly striking another man on the head and face with a metallic ring during an altercation on August 28, 2025. Despite receiving medical attention, the victim died on September 17, and his body has been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.

The news of the man’s death reportedly triggered protests at the suspect’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, where sympathisers of the deceased set two of Adio’s motorcycles ablaze, causing heightened tension in the area.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, led mobile policemen, tactical squads, and conventional officers to the scene to restore order. He assured the public that Adio remains in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Jimoh also appealed to Lagos residents to remain calm and law-abiding, emphasizing the Command’s commitment to ensuring justice is served.
