Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Wednesday formally aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), joining several prominent political figures from the South-East in a move that could reshape opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The declaration took place in Enugu, where leaders from across the South-East and other regions converged after months of behind-the-scenes consultations. The group said their decision was driven by a shared resolve to build a broad opposition front capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Addressing supporters at the gathering, Obi described the decision as a turning point, saying the alliance marked the beginning of a collective effort to reverse what he called years of poor governance and democratic decline.

According to him, Nigeria requires leadership anchored on inclusion, competence and strong institutions, warning that democratic gains were being eroded through intimidation of opposition voices and the weakening of electoral processes.

The former Anambra State governor also issued a strong warning against electoral malpractice ahead of the 2027 polls, vowing that the opposition would resist any attempt to subvert the democratic process through lawful means.

He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold its constitutional responsibilities, stressing that adherence to electoral guidelines, including candidate eligibility requirements, must not be compromised.

Obi further criticised the Federal Government’s tax reform initiatives, arguing that current policies place undue pressure on citizens and businesses and could worsen economic hardship.
