On June 2, 2025, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Anambra State governor, visited Minna, Niger State, to express solidarity with victims of a devastating flash flood in Mokwa Local Government Area.
The flood, triggered by torrential rains from May 28 to 29, claimed 153 lives, displaced over 3,000 people, and destroyed 265 homes, as reported by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency. Obi, accompanied by aides including Yunusa Tanko and Senator Nnenadi Usman, donated ₦20 million to support injured victims and bereaved families, aiming to alleviate their financial burdens. He expressed deep sympathy, praying for the repose of the deceased and resilience for affected families, while pledging to visit Mokwa personally to meet victims directly.
Received by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba on behalf of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, Obi was commended for his humanitarian gesture, with Garba noting his consistent support for disaster victims nationwide. The donation, supplemented by a trailer of grains, has been hailed as a significant relief effort amid Nigeria’s economic challenges, where inflation exceeds 40%.
Obi’s visit underscores his ongoing advocacy for vulnerable communities, having previously suspended his 2023 campaign to focus on flood relief. However, some critics argue the donation, while generous, is a drop in the bucket compared to the ₦500 million needed for Mokwa’s recovery. Supporters, dubbed “Obidients,” praised his empathy, contrasting it with perceived government inaction. The visit has sparked discussions on the need for robust flood-control infrastructure, as Nigeria grapples with climate-driven disasters.
