The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured a resounding victory in the Osun State local government elections, claiming all chairmanship and councillorship positions across the 30 Local Government Areas (LGAs). The comprehensive win, announced by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), has solidified the PDP’s political dominance in the region, despite a backdrop of controversy and an opposition boycott.
“The local council election has been successfully concluded in compliance with constitutional provisions, extant laws, regulations, and guidelines,” Abioye stated. He also emphasized the transparency of the process, noting that results were available for public scrutiny and certified copies could be obtained.
The APC’s decision to boycott the elections stemmed from a February 10 ruling by the Court of Appeal in Akure, which reinstated previously sacked APC local council chairmen. APC State Secretary Alao Kamoru, in a letter to OSSIEC, cited the appellate court’s judgment as the basis for their withdrawal.
The electoral process was not without its challenges. OSSIEC’s headquarters in Osogbo was reportedly sealed by security agencies, and some commission staff were arrested. Despite these obstacles, OSSIEC relocated to an undisclosed venue to ensure the elections proceeded as planned.
