PDP NEC Meeting Concludes, Sets November Convention Date

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) concluded its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on July 24, 2025, agreeing to hold its national convention on November 15 to elect new leadership and strategize for 2027.

The decision, announced by acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, followed a six-hour session addressing internal crises, including defections and the party’s response to APC overtures. The convention aims to unify factions, with plans to review the party’s constitution and elect a substantive chairman to replace Damagum.

The meeting highlighted a split, with some members advocating a legal challenge to defectors, while others, like Governor Bala Mohammed, pushed for reconciliation. Damagum noted the return of PDP members from the opposition coalition as a positive sign, though he warned of ongoing challenges.

Critics within the party question the convention’s feasibility, citing financial constraints and the loss of 26 lawmakers to the APC since 2023. The narrative of renewal is hopeful, but its success depends on addressing deep-seated divisions and countering APC’s momentum.
