In response to the recent diphtheria outbreaks reported in various parts of Nigeria, the Oyo State Government has heightened its public health surveillance and preventive measures to safeguard residents. Dr. Oluwasun Ajetunmobi, the State Commissioner for Health, announced on March 25, 2025, that the government has intensified surveillance, case management, and vaccination campaigns. Healthcare workers are on high alert to respond swiftly to suspected cases.

Diphtheria, a highly contagious bacterial infection, affects the respiratory system and can lead to severe complications, including breathing difficulties, heart failure, and even death if left untreated. Symptoms typically include a sore throat, fever, cough, swollen lymph nodes, difficulty swallowing, and, in severe cases, respiratory distress. The disease spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing and can also be transmitted via contact with contaminated objects or surfaces.

The Oyo State Government is urging residents, particularly parents and guardians, to ensure that their children receive the complete series of diphtheria vaccinations as part of routine immunization schedules. Dr. Ajetunmobi emphasized the importance of community engagement and collaboration with traditional and religious leaders to raise awareness about the disease and the critical need for vaccination. She also advised individuals exhibiting symptoms consistent with diphtheria to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest healthcare facility.

These proactive measures are part of the state’s comprehensive strategy to prevent an outbreak and protect public health, reflecting the government’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens.
