The Osun State local government election has been thrown into uncertainty as police operatives sealed the headquarters of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) and arrested some of its staff members. This move, carried out in the early hours of Friday, February 23, 2025, comes amidst growing controversy surrounding the conduct of the elections.

Reports indicate that the security operatives took action following intelligence reports suggesting a high likelihood of electoral malpractice and possible security breaches. The Nigeria Police Force had earlier advised the Osun State government to suspend the elections due to concerns over safety and proper electoral procedures, but the state government insisted that the polls would go ahead as planned.

The Labour Party (LP) had earlier announced its withdrawal from the election, citing a lack of preparedness on the part of OSSIEC and security concerns raised by the police. Other political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), have expressed varying levels of dissatisfaction with the process, raising concerns over voter suppression and irregularities.

Eyewitnesses at the OSSIEC headquarters reported that police officers stormed the premises, barricaded the entrance, and prevented staff members from accessing the building. Some staff members who attempted to enter the facility were detained for questioning, further escalating tensions in the state.

In response to the incident, the Osun State government condemned the police action, labeling it an attempt to undermine democracy in the state. A statement from the state commissioner for information described the move as “an illegal interference in a democratic process.” However, the police have maintained that their actions were necessary to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

As the situation unfolds, election observers and civil society groups have called for calm, urging both the government and security agencies to prioritize the democratic process while ensuring a free, fair, and credible election.
