Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North, has voiced criticism of the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), for his role in the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election. Oshiomhole asserted that Nwosu failed Nigerians by not officially declaring Chief Moshood Abiola as the election’s winner.
During an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” Oshiomhole argued that if Nwosu had announced Abiola’s victory, the consequences would have been minimal, possibly limited to his detention by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. He emphasized that Nwosu’s inaction deprived Nigerians of the leadership they had chosen.

Furthermore, Oshiomhole opposed any posthumous recognition for Nwosu, stating that the former NEC chairman did not fulfill his duty to the nation by withholding the election results. He contended that honoring Nwosu would be inappropriate given his failure to uphold democratic principles during a critical moment in Nigeria’s history.
