OPay Launches ₦1.2 Billion Scholarship Program at Obafemi Awolowo University

 In a landmark move to support higher education in Nigeria, OPay, a leading financial services company, has announced a ₦1.2 billion scholarship program in partnership with Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. This 10-year initiative aims to provide financial assistance to 4,000 students across 20 Nigerian universities, thereby fostering academic excellence and reducing the financial burden on students.

The scholarship program, which is part of OPay’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts, will award ₦300,000 to each selected student, covering tuition fees and other educational expenses. The selection process is merit-based, targeting students who demonstrate exceptional academic performance and a commitment to contributing positively to society.

During the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between OPay and OAU, the Chief Public Affairs Officer of OPay, Justin Thang, expressed the company’s dedication to empowering Nigerian youths through education. He stated, “By prioritizing education, OPay continues to demonstrate its commitment to Nigeria’s socio-economic growth, proving that corporate responsibility is not just a duty but a catalyst for enduring change.”

The Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Professor Simeon Bamire, lauded the initiative, noting that it aligns with the university’s mission to provide quality education and produce leaders who will drive national development. He expressed optimism that the partnership would inspire other corporate entities to invest in the educational sector.

Students have also expressed gratitude for the scholarship program, acknowledging that it will alleviate financial challenges and enable them to focus on their studies. The initiative is expected to have a ripple effect, encouraging academic excellence and contributing to the overall development of the nation.
