Olubadan Oba Owolabi Olakulehin Passes Away at 90 Amidst Celebratory Milestones

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, passed away at the age of 90 in the early hours of July 7, 2025, at his Alarere Palace, plunging the ancient city into mourning.

His death occurred just two days after a grand celebration of his 90th birthday on July 5, which drew  dignitaries including traditional rulers and government officials, and mere days before the first anniversary of his coronation on July 12, 2024. The monarch, who succeeded Oba Lekan Balogun after a contentious selection process, had reigned for one year, marked by efforts to resolve land disputes and promote cultural heritage among Ibadan’s 3 million residents.

Born on July 5, 1935, in the Ita Baale area of Ibadan, Olakulehin’s life was distinguished by a 20-year military career, retiring as a Major in 1979, followed by a political role as a House of Representatives member from 1979 to 1983 under the National Party of Nigeria. His ascension in 2024, approved by Governor Seyi Makinde despite health concerns, was a testament to his enduring influence.

The sudden loss has triggered a 7-day mourning period, with the Olubadan-in-Council, led by High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, set to convene by July 9 to begin succession rites. Governor Makinde has pledged a state-funded burial including a cultural festival to honour Olakulehin’s legacy.
