The Olubadan-In-Council unanimously endorsed former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, following the death of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin on July 07, 2025.

The nomination took place at the Olubadan Palace in Oke-Aremo, with Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, the Balogun of Ibadanland, nominating Ladoja, seconded by Oba Eddy Oyewole, the new Otun Olubadan. The decision awaits formal approval from Governor Seyi Makinde, who will set the coronation date, marking a significant transition in Ibadan’s unique dual-line chieftaincy system.

Ladoja, born September 25, 1944, brings a wealth of political and traditional experience, having served as governor from 2003 to 2006 and recently accepting a beaded crown in August 2024, a prerequisite for ascension. His nomination reflects the Otun line’s turn, following Olakulehin’s tenure from the Balogun line.

The process, held at the newly inaugurated palace, symbolizes continuity, though some residents express concern over potential political interference, given Ladoja’s PDP background and past tensions with Makinde. The narrative of traditional succession is steeped in history, with Ladoja’s leadership expected to bridge modernity and heritage, though its success will depend on smooth gubernatorial ratification.
